Beyond the shoot

How a video introduction improves your chances of getting jobs

A photo tells someone what you look like. Thirty seconds of you talking tells them what it's like to be in a room with you. For most jobs, that's the thing they're actually trying to work out.

Video introduction still
"A CV and a headshot answer 'does this person meet the bar?' A video answers the question that actually decides a hire: would I want to work with them?"

Every recruiter or hiring manager sifting applications is doing two jobs at once: filtering out people who clearly don't fit, and forming a first impression of the people who might. A CV and a still photo are efficient for the first job and almost useless for the second. Tone of voice, how someone thinks on their feet, whether they come across as engaged or flat — none of that survives on paper.

That's the case for adding a short video introduction alongside your headshots, not instead of them. The photo still does the job it's good at: a clear, professional, consistent image wherever your application shows up. The video does a different job — it gives the person reading your application a fuller sense of you before they've committed to a call.

"Attention is the actual currency in a stack of applications. A moving, talking person is harder to skim past than a paragraph of text."

There's also a simple attention argument. Most applications are read fast and skimmed hard. A short video breaks the pattern of scrolling text — it's a different kind of thing to engage with, and it's much harder to half-read the way a paragraph gets half-read. That alone buys you more genuine consideration than another bullet-pointed list of responsibilities.

And it differentiates. If most applicants for a role are sending the same format — CV, cover letter, LinkedIn profile — a well-made video introduction stands out simply by being a different medium, done well. It signals a bit of effort and confidence that a static application can't.

"None of this replaces being qualified. It gets you a fairer hearing once you already are."

None of this is a substitute for being right for the role. A video won't rescue an application that doesn't meet the basic requirements. What it can do is tip the odds in your favour among candidates who are otherwise close — which, for most competitive roles, is exactly where the real decision gets made.

A session gives you the still images and the natural, relaxed footage to build a short introduction from — see what's included.
